Complicated Existing Conditions
We approach our projects in existing facilities with a different perspective than most of the industry. With 4 senior staff members experienced in hands-on construction, we have a different level of understanding about what it takes to build projects with complicated existing conditions and how to minimize the shutdowns and impacts on neighboring operational departments and spaces.
Some complicating conditions remain unseen behind walls and ceilings until demolition begins. When these surprises strike, our hard hats and safety vests go on and we work on-site with the contractor to find solutions in real time that meet the needs of the project and keeps the project on track.
Sharp Grossmont Hospital – Level 1 InFill
Sharp Grossmont Hospital – La Mesa, CA
With 540 beds, Sharp Grossmont Hospital is the largest hospital in San Diego’s East County. Known for its clinical excellence in emergency and critical care, as well as many other inpatient and outpatient services, the facility focuses on providing excellent care as part of the Sharp Experience to every patient that enters through its doors.
Concurent with the construction of a new Heart and Vascular Building, portions of the existing facility were repurposed & remodeled as part of a massive “Infill” project. New modern lab and pharmacy facilites were provided along with new cath-labs, storage and SPD services areas. 15 new pre-op and 30 PACU bays support the 16 operating room surgical department, as do the new physician and staff lockers and lounges. The SPD was remodeled to support the expanded surgical department, while a new Sharp Experience Center was added.
The hospital remained fully operational throughout the multi-phased construction. The project included demolishing existing electrical systems within the area of remodel and providing the renovated areas with a segregated code-compliant electrical system.
This project consisted of areas within the East Tower and the North and South Wings of the existing facility as well as a small building addition. No two sections of the existing construction were the same, and therefore the successful completion of this project required a hands on approach from the design team in order to swiftly and expertly mitigate the many unforeseen existing conditions discovered in the course of implementation.
