Ensign Northern California Microgrids
Ensign Northern California Microgrids
Northern California
Ensign runs a number of Skilled Nursing Facilities throughout the state of California. At 5 of their more remote facilities, in locations with high fire risk, they were concerned about the reliability of the utilities feeding the sites. They wanted to ensure that their facilities would be able to continue operations, serving their patients during a utility power outage.
The solution was to hire Tanner Engineering to design microgrids involving Combined Heating and Power (CHP) systems for each site. These systems generate the power needed for the facilities to fully run off-grid for extended periods of time, thereby continuing to provide a safe space and continued patient care when the facilities are at risk of loss of power.
Newly acceptable to facilities within OSHPD/HCAI’s jurisdiction, microgrid systems like this can help to meet AB 2511 / PIN 74. These 5 facilities were 5 of the first 7 projects that OSHPD/HCAI approved for microgrid systems in Skilled Nursing facilities.
