La Vina Building Emergency Power Upgrade
Huntington Memorial Hospital – Pasadena, CA
Huntington Memorial Hospital was concerned with the power quality of the Essential Electrical System in their La Vina building, and engaged Tanner Engineering to study the issues. The study revealed that the on-going Cath-Lab department’s expansion would overload the existing system. The resulting Essential Electrical System’s upgrade project was fast-tracked in order to be completed before the Cath Lab project would need the additional power.
The EES upgrade project for the 100,000 sq ft patient care building took only 6 months from start of design, OSHPD Processing through construction.
The project replaced the 600A, 480V, single transfer switch system with a 1.5MW 4160V to 277/480V substation, 4 transfer switches; Life Safety, Critical, Equipment, + Equipment (dedicated to radiology), and associated distribution.
Key to the construction and design was the routing of the new 4160V feeder over 1200 ft across the fully operational campus without disrupting normal activities.
