NRG Downtown District Plant Upgrade
NRG Downtown District Plant Upgrade
655 Broadway – San Diego, CA
NRG, one of the nation’s leaders in the integrated power market, began their partnership with Tanner Engineering in 1999. TE was retained to perform master planning and electrical design drawings to increase the capacity of the downtown district co-generation plant by 400%. Due to space limitations, the plant upgrade needed to be contained within the same footprint as the existing plant. The solution was to design a series of internal mezzanines.
The 3,000 ton plant was upgraded to 12,000 tons. Internal mezzanines and cable trays provided additional space for pumps and motor contral centers above the existing distribution and chillers. At the end of the project, the two 4160V services to the plant were fully utilized. The 12kV main service was upgraded, and the co-generation distribution was re-configured.
In 2003, Tanner Engineering was engaged to re-configure the site utilities to accommodate the construction of the Tower at 655 Broadway.
Extensive and detailed planning for all of the projects enabled plant operations to be maintained throughout all phases of construction.
