Sharp Coronado Emergency Power Upgrade
Emergency Power System Upgrade
Sharp Coronado Hospital – Coronado, CA
Coronado Island’s Sharp Coronado Hospital serves the 25,000 residents of the island as their only acute care facility. With 64 beds, an emergency department, ICU, surgical, imaging, radiology, and other inpatient and outpatient care, this facility is crucial for its community.
California’s state mandate for all SPC-1 rated buildings to be taken out of service by 2012 posed an issue for this facility’s emergency power system, as the 1968 500kW generator was housed in an SPC-1 building.
The resulting project replaced the single generator with (2) 300kW generators paralleled to increase reliability and improve annual testing protocol.
Adding to the complexity of the project were the logistical challenges of the adjacencies to the Skilled Nursing Facility, and the City of Coronado’s concerns with aesthetics.
