UCSD BMW Battery Storage
UCSD BMW Battery Storage
University of California San Diego – San Diego, CA
Tanner Engineering, in partnership with Terawatt Construction and BMW, designed and constructed this first-of-kind, experimental project. BMW, in anticipation of the roll out of their electric vehicle production, was seeking commercially viable uses of the batteries after they are removed from the cars.
This Second-Use Battery Project consists of the installation of six (6) Battery Packs removed from BMW Electric Vehicles (EV).
The system stores power from the photovoltaic system on the roof of the parking structure and discharges power to the grid to reduce peak energy costs or to charge electric vehicles. The system consists of 162kWh Lithium ion batteries.
